September Cleaning Checklist

« Return to News

I love September -- it's late summer -- it's early fall. I'm not quite ready to put up the patio chairs just yet but I am keeping a watchful eye on the coming cooler months and those upcoming holidays. This is what I am up to cleaning wise around my home - I think it works well. Hope you like it :)

I always start on the outside - cause it is too pretty to be indoors
  • Clean up the yard - in late September it's the perfect time for transplants, landscaping and your landscape maintenance. There's nothing like the smell of fresh mulch. Word to the wise - don't use black mulch!!!! It is loaded with chemicals and they are incredibly toxic.
  • Gutter repairs
  • Fall flowers into containers - I have even brought some of my plants indoors at this point
  • Check your weather stripping and caulk around doors and windows - repair as needed
  • Check the exterior of the house for repairs like paint etc
  • Clean outdoor lighting fixtures - it makes a world of difference

Inside the house (also known as rainy day's around here)

  • Check smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire extinguisher levels
  • Buy extra batteries
  • Change out the air filters in the furnace
  • Clean the windows on a cloudy day
  • Vacuum drapes
  • Make a big batch of homemade cleaning supplies for the season (I like to add nutmeg essential oil for a nice fall scent)
  • Dust the blinds
  • Dust the ceiling fans
  • Deep clean the kitchen
Begin the closet transition - bring in some more fall clothing pieces and store some summer items, dust the closet and finish up any organizing needed - new hangers, sachets, polish shoes for the coming season if needed, and work with the kids to make sure your teaching them to do the same. Have them sort through their old toys and clothes and decide what to keep and what to give to charity. My number one rule with the closet is it should feel like a well curated boutique - you should love your closet.

Happy Cleaning  - Sabrina
