Ideas for Greener Laundry as seen on Channel 27

« Return to News

As much as I love fashion it takes me a bit more effort to love laundry. I have to get a little eco-chic in order to make the process more appealing to me. These ideas below are affordable and fabulous DIY's that will help you have a greener laundry experience.

All Purpose Laundry Detergent

1 bar of favorite earth friendly soap (grated)
1/2 cup of borax
1/2 cup of washing soda

Mix all ingredients. Keep in a sealed storage container. Use 1 tablespoon per full load.

Note: I use this formula in a HE front loading machine without any problems but I encourage everyone to check with the manufacturer as I can only tell you my personal experience. If you prefer a liquid you can add water to the above formula - tons of recipes are posted on you tube :)

Scented Fabric Softener

4 cups Distilled White Vinegar
2-3 drops of essential Oil of choice ( I love lavender for this and you may find that you only like 1 drop as essential oils are quite strong)

Mix. Store in a bottle with a cap. Use 1/2 cup per full load.

The two most basic laundry components are detergent and fabric softener. I use the above two combo's for most of our laundry needs. It is great for sheets, gym clothes, towels, socks and of course jeans and T-shirts. And it is really inexpensive when you compare it to regular commercialized cleaning products.  For more green information on laundry I simply love The Laundress website. They are truly the pioneers when it comes to caring for fabrics naturally and their blog is fabulous.

Happy Laundering
